Claude Monet (1840-1928) is best known for leading the Impressionist movement through his interest in capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings. Born in Paris, France, he studied at the Académie Gleyre, there meeting other young artists like Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille. In Parisian cafe society, he also met Pisarro, Manet, and Cezanne, and it was through his conversations with these men that he developed his own distinct style. Monet realized that objects take on color from their surrroundings, and his works reflect a life long study of the color changing qualities of light, expressed through the application of clear colors on white canvas. Among his most famous works are those depicting water lilies, haystacks, garden scenes, and Rouen Cathedral.
