Vincent Willem Van Gogh (1853-1890) is acclaimed to be the greatest Dutch painter since Rembrandt with an artistic career spanning only ten years. His works strongly influenced Expressionism in modern art. Alongside Cezanne and Gauguin, he was considered among the greatest of the Post-Impressionist artists. He also knew Pissarro, Degas, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Seurat. His works feature coarse brushwork and striking colors, the paint often extruded from tubes directly onto the canvas. His works are notable for their vibrant colors, thick impasto technique, and the use of the expressive and symbolic values of colors. Among his most important works are The Starry Night (1889), The Night Cafe (1888), Sunflowers, as well as many landscapes, still-lifes, and some emotionally-charged, revealing self-portraits. He suffered from mental illness that eventually ended in suicide.
