Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was born in Zundert, Netherlands and is thought to be the greatest Dutch painter since Rembrandt. His entire artistic career spanned only a ten year period, but it strongly influenced Expressionism in modern art. Alongside Cezanne and Gauguin, he was considered among the greatest of the Post-Impressionist artists. His works feature coarse brushwork and striking colors, the paint often extruded from tubes directly onto the canvas. Among his most important works are The Starry Night (1889), The Night Cafe (1888), Sunflowers, as well as many landscapes, still-lifes, and some emotionally-charged, revealing self-portraits.

He trained for the ministry in his early life, but eventually his quality of life became difficult as he was often on the verge of poverty and starvation. During his productive years from 1881 to 1885, he was supported in the Netherlands by his beloved brother Theo. Moving to Antwerp in 1885, van Gogh studied at the Academy. He eventually moved to Paris where he becme acquainted with Pissarro, Degas, Gauguin, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec. He became intrigued by the expressive and symbolic values of colors and used them to advantage to forcibly convey his imagery. His works are notable for their vibrant colors and thick impasto technique. He suffered from mental illness that eventually ended in suicide.
