Jean-Francois Millet (1814-75) was born in Normandy, France, the son of a small peasant farmer. He showed early promise in drawing, and he came to Paris in 1838 to study art. He suffered from extreme poverty, but he managed to exhibit at the French Salon in 1840 for the first time. His work then consisted mainly of mythological subjects and portraiture, but his rural background caused him to return to depictions of peasant life and he remained true to that for the remainder of his artistic career.

In 1849, he moved to Barbizon due to an outbreak of cholera and was one of those who created the Barbizon School of painting. He became an inspiration for younger artists, many of whom he helped. His work influenced both Monet and Pissarro. His draughtsmanship appealed artists such as Seurat and van Gogh.
