This detail from La Primavera features the three graces, companions to the goddess Venus, on the right side flanked by Mercury, the messenger of the gods, on the left side. Mercury can be identified by his winged shoes and cadeucis (staff with entwined snakes). La Primavera is one of two companion masterpiece works done by Botticelli in mid-life for the villa of Lorenzo di Pierofrancesco de' Medici in Castello, later known as Lorenzo the Magnificent. The other is The Birth of Venus. Botticelli's model is, as always, the famous Florentine beauty, Simonetta Vespucci.
