This is a unique hand painted chess board made from fine white alabaster stone, with designs based on famous scenes from antique mosaics and frescoes like those of the Greek Minoan civilization found on the islands of Crete and Santorini in the Aegean.

The palace at Knossos on Crete with its labyrinthine substructure is thought to be the origin for the legendary Greek tale of the Minotaur. On the nearby island of Santorini is the small village of Akroteri. Like Pompeii, Akroteri was destroyed by a volcanic eruption about 3,500 years ago. Most scholars believe that this occurrence signaled the end of the Minoan civilization.

This chessboard picks up the beautiful, vibrant colors of the sun and sea of the region.
