Painted for Lorenzo de' Medici for his villa in Castello, this mythological work is Botticelli's most famous image. The model for Venus was the renowned Florentine beauty Simonetta Vespucci, mistress of Lorenzo's dead brother, Giuliano de' Medici. When Botticelli painted this work, Simonetta had been dead for a decade. She died young at the age of 23, but Botticelli continued to use her face for every female image in his paintings until his death 35 years later. He asked to be buried at her feet. The companion piece to this work is La Primavera, an Allegory of sSpring.
