Northern Renaissance artist, Hieronymus Bosch, (ca. 1450-1516) was a complex, highly creative northern European painter of the late Middle Ages whose work is deeply rooted in religious iconography and symbolism. He had a pessimistic view of a world which he considered to be corrupted through the deeds of men. While scholars disagree as to exactly what the real inspiration for his work was, a few believe he had associations with the occult arts.
The masterpiece of his mature style is The Garden of Earthly Delights, depicting a scene of paradise with the creation of woman, the first temptation, and the fall. The fanciful landscape with its many figures and giant birds inhabit a harmonious, dreamlike yet bizarre world of Bosch's imagination.
