Flemish painter Robert Campin (1375/80-1444) was also known as the Master of Flemalle, however, this attribution is uncertain. Campin was born in Tournai, where he became qualified as a master in 1406/07. Considered one of the primary founders of the Netherlandish school of painting along with the Van Eyck brothers. Campin was influenced early in his career by the Limburg brothers, but he soon developed a style of three-dimensional representation and depth exploration. His mature style is fully realized in his masterpiece The Merode Altarpiece. He probably taught Rogier van der Weyden.
