The Northern Renaissance, Belgian artist, Jan Van Eyck, is believed to have been born around 1390 in a province of Limbourg called Maaseick. He had an extensive employment record working for John of Bavaria, Count of Holland, in The Hauge in 1422 and for Duke Phillip the Good of Burgandy in 1425 whom he worked with until he died. He bought a house in Burges in 1432-33 where he died in 1441. He is credited with perfecting the art of oil-based painting.

Jan Van Eyck painted the Arnolfini Wedding Portrait. This is an exquisite and detailed oil-based painting that is thought to actually be a 15th century marriage license. Flanders at the time could hold private ceremonies and so they needed witnesses. It is believed that Jan Van Eyck was a witness to this ceremony. There is symbolism everywhere you look in this painting and of special interest is the reflection in the mirror. It is believed to be a self portrait of Van Eyck.
