Gustaf Klimt was born in 1862 in Vienna, Austria. He is known for using gold leaf with his paint. Although he was often criticized for his untraditional form of work, he continued to do things his way. In 1876, when he was 14 he was given a scholarship to the Vienna School of Applied Arts and he went on to decorate municipal buildings after graduation. In 1897 he was elected president of a group aimed at furthering new forms of artistic expression called the Vienna Secession. He suffered a stroke in 1918 and died.
A fine art auction in New York in November, 2006 of Nazi looted art reaped a huge result for Christie's Auction House and the Bloch-Bauer heir. Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II sold for the third highest price ever at a fine art auction for a Klimt at $88 million.
