An innovative work, Donatello's David, a bronze sculpture executed ca. 1425-1430, is the first large-scale, free-standing nude statue of the Renaissance. Donatello's David statue with its sensual contrapposto stance eventually ended up occupying the center of the Medici palace courtyard at the wedding of Lorenzo de Medici (Il Magnifico). It remained there until the Medici were expelled from Florence, then it was taken to the Palazzo Vecchio. It is unknown whether Donatello's David was a Medici commission, although Donatello worked for the Medici from 1433-43.
